Cats and Monkeys

dead blackbird
on the blade of my shovel
when you wake up
you'll be glad it's gone
and
you'll see
i dug up one of the dead trees
out the back
the baby and i
praying mantis
lives in the ivy
we agree; he doesn't want to die
and i don't want to be touched
we work together to trim the vine
while little spider web fingers
plays in the leaves
try to hide the loneliness
in games of cat and monkey sounds
i won't be a burden to you that way
i only want to stay
you could take off to your brother's
to think i through
i could stay here
try to stay straight
fix up the house a little bit
cut some fresh lilies from around the side
for the day you come home
i'll do it all right
try to hide the loneliness
in games of cat and monkey sounds
i won't be a burden to you that way
i only want to stay

Broken Fifty

put the baby in the pram
walk her to the bottle shop
staring at the counter
as you rifle out all the change
from the pockets in your jeans
"it's a good enough day", you say, "a little windy"
and his eyes brand the back of your neck
as you limp out
i close my eyes
and inside there are sand dunes
and colourful snakes
preserved in bottles of vodka
i open them
and we are a reflection
slipping along the cards
on the factory estate
people still working
on sunday afternoon
now you're finally asleep
and the urge is gone
better find somewhere
to dump this stuff and get home

Excavation Site
04:04
|

on the first day it rained water
dusty drops fell like ribbons in the wind
to fall on the street
on the second day it rained sand
a solid shower of yellow and white
turned our street into an excavation site
on the third day it rained planks and nails
leaving a pile of cheap weapons
we closed the curtains
on the fourth day it rained razor blades
on the fifth day it rained bricks
and on the sixth day
it rained mercury
our skin has blisters upon blisters
hearts are dry and useless
now that the sun is bright and low
in the clear blue sky
and the baby cries and cries
pure tears all through the night
and here we are
in our soft clothes
tears condense on the windows
