Lisa
04:02
|
|||
robert, where are you this morning?
did your dad take you out in his new car?
i don't care
i'm headed down the storm drains
with my matches and my kerosene jar
i will burn down the bamboo
burn down the grass
smoke in my hair
snakes in the air
flames on the water
like glass
lisa and me hide with the spiders
under the fort with the red slide
by her house
her brother's cigarettes
crushed inside her dress
we smoke, we sit, it's quiet
i will burn down the bamboo
burn down the grass
smoke in my hair
snakes in the air
flames on the water like glass
you should've seen it
there was nothing left
fence wire stained black
sand speckled with ash
pigeons watching from the neighbour's fence
where i left the hose
hanging and dripping
i will burn down the bamboo
burn down the grass
smoke in my hair
snakes in the air
flames on the water like glass

Planes
03:52
|
|||
sleeping on a plane over the red sea
the steward gently lifts your tray
do you ever wake in fear for the next day?
i don't know, how could i?
mowing underneath the jacaranda
i hit my head again
and that was it
i cut the branches back
until the saw was clogged with sap
i always take things too far
the kids at the pool were terrified
at the sight of you
so bare and white
treading water up the deep end
where they couldn't reach you
a tennis ball floating by your side
the house is silent, again
i should be working, but i can't
a burst of static
the pilot announces your descent
roused by the change in pitch
you stretch
and you scowl
and you wipe your chin with a towel

The Desert
04:29
|
|||
when you call
call my name
don't shout
don't shout
when you talk
talk to me
don't shout
you don't have to
love, i am tired of holding on
and i know
know you don't care
who's gonna hear
what you have to say
and the silence
doesn't bother you much
you assume
that i agree
love, i am tired of holding on
you punch me in the stomach
in the kitchen of our house
you throw things when you can't bear to be
a man who hits
on a coach
crossing the desert
with a book
and some cold tea
and the memory of that man
who had to be so unkind

There Goes the Rain
04:45
|
|||
there goes the rain
over the quarry
white walls turn yellow
tiny dust clouds
kicked up and smothered
there goes the rain
there goes the rain
here comes the sun
the air turns steamy
flashing on the broadcast towers
high on the tiny mountain
cicadas rasping in the garden
here comes the sun
here comes the sun
stopping the car outside the church
watching the christmas lights
spiraling up the tree trunks
tripping along the path
i always forget you
at christmas time
stick a needle in your arm
you wouldn't think i could understand it
but though they don't know my name
they know my face
we only hide in a different place
there goes the rain again
stopping the car outside the church
watching the christmas lights
spiraling up the tree trunks
tripping along the path
i always forget you

Firewood
03:29
|
|||
sitting on the swings
with her headphones on
swaying higher and higher
skipping between the songs
i'm pushing, i'm pushing, i'm pushing you away
let's get some firewood
we'll need it
it's gonna be a cold one
there's a tree that's good by the drains
blown over in the storm
i'm pushing, i'm pushing, i'm pushing you away
walking on, walking on
it's a little way to go
we'll get all this stuff in the car
and brush the ants off your clothes
you don't have to worry
you don't have to understand
flowers in my pocket
bruised by a little hand

The Owl
05:36
|
|||
i was riding up the mountain
where i like to go
when i have some time
there in the gravel
staring in to the sky
where the crows and the pigeons
continue to fly
i stopped
the owl's beak
opened just a crack
and she started to speak
she said -
"it was not a power-line
and it was not a tall, tall truck
not a cat, not a fox
i just ran out of luck"
she said -
"look at you
you're cracking eyes
are gonna give you away
every single time
why can't you decide to stay
or run away
when there's nothing in either place
but the things you left behind?"
i did not go to the mountains today
i went home, took a shower
and tidied up the place
to show my gratitude for the love you gave

Dragonfly
04:14
|
|||
lying on the top of the wall
you and your wasted boyfriend
stroking his hair
shielding his eyes
as the sunny day rolls away
i remember being cared for
when i did not care at all
you get up to leave
the breeze across the river is getting cold
he shivers and he pushes himself up
head aches, temples throb
i remember being cared for
when i did not care at all
a dragonfly can recognise
its shimmering black cross below
unfurling like a map
before your eyes
the skin roads and valleys
all leading down
it won't be today
tomorrow, the next day
or in a week
but
here i am
come to get my stuff
back from you

Wednesday Afternoon
05:15
|
|||
wednesday afternoon
hardest time of the week
but nothing that a little drink
wouldn't nullify
i'm playing hide and seek
playing snakes and ladders
in my mind
i'm playing hide and seek
behind my eyes
when you come home from work
i need to talk to someone
but you've got things to do
a lot of stuff to catch up on
i'm playing hide and seek
playing chinese checkers
in my mind
i'm playing hide and seek
behind my eyes
i've got friends who work
i've got friends who fuck around
but they're all far away now
from over the fence i hear
their mother screaming -
"just get away from me
just don't talk to me
just get out
just get out"

Twilight
04:28
|
|||
quiet
what i was taught to be
when i was a boy
and i thought
you could always pick
a criminal from his clothes
a drinker from his nose
the ravens from the crows
twilight
the end of another day
people heading home
talking on the phone
working out
what next to do
tail lights
all drawing lines away from here
paths that i could follow
all the way into tomorrow
there you are
behind the blinds
hand covering your mouth
and the television
oblivious

Freeze
06:04
|
|||
another hot day
i look out over the tiles
cracked and dirty
and the crows
perched, still
on the fence
upstairs
the neighbour's girl starts crying loudly
the crow flies
her father is tying bird nets
over the strawberries
waiting for it to end
i have drifted away
but i'm coming back
day by day
feeding stale bread
to the ducks
and the turtles
and the lizards
though the sign says "do not"
our ankles
itchy and red
from mosquito bites
i have drifted away
but i'm coming back
day by day
at the scummy end of the creek
where everything lives
i came back from the dead
and carried you home on my shoulders
