Weeds
05:23
|
|||
dandelions
alligator weed
the mother of millions
countless prickly seeds
sticking in your arms
sticking in your legs
sticking in your clothes
careful not to touch your face
tufts of nutgrass
poking out
from beneath
the plastic i laid
to line the pebble drain
try to pull it up
try to suffocate it in the dark
or burn it with poison
or crush it underfoot
something wants to come up
something wants to get out
cracks creak
holes leak
and we speak
about what to do
with this mess

Secret Animals
04:22
|
|||
they say there's dingoes
that run the creek at night
from the mountains to the suburbs
flipping turtles, gnawing mice
it's not true
we all know
it's not true
and a story of a girl
with no face and no family
she lived in your house
she lived in my house
you never know where she'd be
she stroked the dog
she stole your socks
she watched you fall asleep
from on top of the cupboard
from underneath the bed
from inside of the ceiling
right above your head
it's true
yeah, this one's true
it's true, sadly for you
nothing comes out in the dark
that we don't already know about
there never really were any secret animals

Blowing Around
03:44
|
|||
you never see it until it's come
never need it before it's gone
we didn't choose this, all the moving around
no-one would choose this
say goodbye to your room
and all the hiding places
say goodbye to the friend
you barely got to play with
and her mother
who looks at me in fear
and something other
that i don't choose to hear
get in the car
you're tired, i know
put on your belt
it's time to go
if you're thirsty
we'll stop on the road
for something sweet
and something cold

Tomorrow People
04:59
|
|||
i know
you feel old
it's hard enough to get up
i know
you say
you'll give it all away
it's hard enough to show up
every day
shower time
coconut and lime
to hate a day
is no crime
driving
it's raining
radio says
traffic's slow
this morning
up high
he can't find his glasses
again
where have i been today?
backtrack to the bed
and fall away
papery skin, folding
barely holding

Everybody Knows
05:30
|
|||
sit fast
it'll pass
and listen to the birds
end their day
you're too old
to be living this way
everybody knows
come two, or three, in the afternoon
it don't need a reason
to lay down inside you
you could wait it out
or wipe it out
it's up to you
everybody knows
go to sleep, my darling
i won't wake you up
when i pull myself upright
and fumble around in the night
for a pillow
for a blanket
for something to head off the pain

Not a Swimming Beach
03:27
|
|||
long front yards
boat-shaped houses
all surrounding the bay
satellite dishes
what would you need them for these days?
these days i fall asleep faster
in the back room
glass and muffled laughter
it's all right, it's ok
time to get up now, anyway
low tide
walking on the rock shelf
looking for signs of life
tiny fish, see-through
crabs, black and blue
a sea wasp cloud
this is not a swimming beach
more for fishing and walking dogs
and holding hands
and forgetting the past

Broken Toes
05:06
|
|||
steven kicks the table
on his way to get a beer
another broken toe
nothing they can do
today i watched my shadow
wander up the wall
until the sunrise came
and stared it down again
i won't watch this again
i won't read this again
i won't hear this again
i won't feel this again
steven hits his head
on the way down to the floor
something that was coming
could not wait no more
it's hidden in your brain
it's hidden in your heart
it's hidden in the way
you picked yourself apart
i won't watch this again
i won't read this again
i won't hear this again
i won't feel this again

Leaving Town
03:40
|
|||
leaving town
don't turn around
where will you go?
i don't know
what will i say
when they ask me why?
